Just after midnight on December 21, 2024, the U.S. Senate voted and PASSED Bill H.R.82 - The Social Security Fairness Act. The House of Representatives passed the bill with overwhelming bipartisan support in November. If the legislation is signed into law by President Joe Biden, it would apply to all benefits payable after December 2023.
The passage of this bill rights a wrong that has adversely affected workers since signed into law by then President Ronald Regan in 1983. The law has directly harmed all public service employees for 41 years by taking away Social Security monies that were EARNED by workers before or after their employment in the public sector (pension system).
While the bill yesterday faced attempts to delay, “run out the clock” or block by Senators Rand Paul (R) and Ted Cruz (R), the bill was PASSED by a vote of 76-20 with 4 abstentions.
This bill is decades overdue. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) was another method of wage theft placed on the backs of the hard-working Americans that keep our communities and country running. WEP reduced the benefits for retired or disabled workers who had fewer than 30 years of significant earnings from employment covered by Social Security if they also receive pensions on the basis of noncovered employment.
The passage of the Social Security Fairness Act ensures that people who have earned their credits into the Social Security System GET WHAT THEY EARNED!
SEIU Local 888 members who have accrued Social Security credits before or after their public service careers DIRECTLY BENEFIT from this bill passage and you will now receive every penny you have earned instead of the factored percentage of the WEP.
When we fight, WE WIN!
