The 37th UALE Northeast Summer School for Union Women is a five-day residential program, sponsored by the United Association for Labor Education (UALE). The school brings together rank-and-file members, staff, and officers of unions and workers' rights organizations to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the U.S. labor movement, and to develop skills that will prepare them to be more active members and leaders. UALE advocates education as an essential tool to develop new activists and leaders who will grow and transform the labor movement.

This year's school is hosted by the Labor programs at the University of Massachusetts, and will be held on the UMass Amherst campus. The school will be coordinated by Anneta Argyres, Dale Melcher, Kim Wilson and Susan Winning, of the UMass Labor Extension Program, and Kathy Casavant, the Director of Governance, Organizational and leadership Development for the AFL-CIO.

The Program All students attend classes designed to teach and improve leadership skills. In addition, each student chooses three skills workshops -- one four-day workshop and two two-day workshops. There are evening activities and opportunities to network. Summer School instructors are union officers, staff and labor educators from universities and unions. All workshops will be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus Center. Workshops that may be offered include: •    Collective Bargaining •    Labor Law •    Radio Waves •    Basic Grievance Handling •    Public Speaking •    Internal & External Organizing •    Advanced Grievance Handling & Arbitration •    Safety & Health •    Mobilizing for Political and Legislative Activity.
